Each semester the UMD Center for Economic Development collaborates with UMD faculty members on the Student to Business Initiative (SBI). This initiative partners student teams with businesses to work on business issues relevant to the student’s coursework. The goal of this program is to enhance the relationship between UMD and small businesses in our community by developing experiential learning opportunities that fit the business community needs.

Here is what business participants have said about the programs:
“We were quite pleased with the results of the program. The students took the time to listen to our organization, conducted in-depth research, then provided a professional presentation on their marketing recommendations. We will be incorporating several of the student’s innovative ideas in our adoption promotion plan and I believe more animals will find loving homes as a result.”
Madeline Robbins, Development & Communications Director
Animal Allies Humane Society
“I enjoyed being part of this project and would definitely recommend it to another business.
The students were professional and prepared from my first interaction with them to the last,
they were interested in the project, asked good questions, and genuinely seemed to want to help
Big Frog succeed. Thank you!”
Keli Casey, Owner
Big Frog Custom T-Shirts & More of Duluth
“The [students] were excellent and I just thoroughly enjoyed being a part of this program. I was very impressed with the quality of their ideas, creativity and professionalism! We are so fortunate to have this great university and opportunity to work with its students. I just know what the students have presented to us will be implemented in the near future and they should be proud of their contribution.”
